FAQ

How much do you charge?

£11.50 for 30 minutes / £23 for 1 hour.

Where are the lessons based?

In Crumlin (next to Treowen)

Do you travel to your student’s homes?

No. All my students will need to come to my teaching studio in Crumlin.

Do I need to bring a guitar or drum kit?

It is advisable to bring your own guitar, as each instrument is slightly different.

However, for students trying an instrument before deciding whether to pursue it, a guitar can be borrowed for the lesson.

There is no need to bring a drum kit. A drum kit is provided for lessons.

However, in both cases it is preferable to own an instrument to practice with.

Can you show me how to play my favourite songs?

Yes, if that is what you want to do. Note that some songs may be beyond the ability of the student’s current level. It is sometimes possible to simplify parts or work on easier sections of the song if appropriate.

Do I have to learn to read music?

Most people have no desire to learn to read music. What they want is to learn to play their instrument. These are two different things, albeit related.

There will be a need to learn some basic descriptive terms, chord charts, rudimentary rhythmic understanding and guitar tablature. If the student is learning drums, the basics of drum notation will be introduced.

However, none of these will be heavy on theory unless the student wishes. They will be introduced gradually, and systematically when appropriate.

Understanding the basics will allow the student to understand and recall historical information and documents given to them by the tutor.

Don’t worry, I will show you!

Do I need to make notes at lessons?

Lesson notes are sent electronically to each student. The notes are also available to view on a website which the student has access to.

Can I record my guitar in a lesson?

Mike has the facility for recording electric guitars if you wish. Sometimes it is useful to hear yourself after being recorded. It provides a good representation of your playing at a particular stage in your musical development. It is also fun and nice to have a copy of your playing documented.

Can I sit with my child through a lesson?

Yes. I encourage parents to sit in on their child’s lesson. The more engaged the parents are, the better their child does.

What ages do you teach?

Mike teaches from age 7 up to beyond retirement age.

My child is 7 years old. What size guitar should I buy?

Generally, it's a good idea to start off with 3/4 size guitar. Starting off with a nylon string guitar helps as it's much easier to "fret" or hold down notes on the instrument.

What if I have to cancel my lesson?

No problem. Simply give me at least 24 hours notice and there will be no charge.

How do I pay for lessons?

Cash or Credit/Debit cards.
